After a dominating 34-0 showing against the streaking but one-dimensional Minnesota Vikings, can the Packers finally be considered full-blown contenders? At 7-1, there was still plenty of doubt surrounding this young and often inexperienced team. With only a handful of players over the age of 30, and very few with big game experience, there was good reason for questioning if this team was good enough to be considered as good as their record makes them look. (click for the rest)

While Favre is the most game-worn player the Packers have, the players around him are making the best of what they can offer. Ryan Grant (whom you may want to pick up for your fantasy team), has come out of Nowhere, New York to give Favre a legitimate running game, putting up 100 yard games against Denver and Minnesota, the number 2 ranked rushing defense in the league, while averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Of course, having Favre throwing like he’s 25 again helps. If not for Brady’s performance thus far, Favre may be a front-runner for MVP, throwing for 2,757 yards and 16 TDs with a QB rating of 96.2 nine games into the season. Add the dimension of the run game from Grant, and the Packers offense has to be considered a full-blown threat.

The defense has been impressive, ranking in the top 5 against the rush and the top 15 against the pass. Their performance against Minnesota was more than dominating, holding Adrian Peterson to below-average numbers, keeping the Vikings below 200 yards total offense until late in the forth quarter, making big plays when they needed it most, and keeping the Minnesota defense on the field for over 2/3 of the game. While the defense has continued to give impressive showings week after week, cutting down on penalties will be the main concern for Green Bay. Cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson lead all cornerbacks in penalties this year, and the team has been averaging over 5 per game.

If Green Bay can cut down penalties, keep turnovers down, and play as dominating of defense as the did against Minnesota, watch for this Packers team to be extremely competitive come playoff time. With a tough schedule coming in the last 7 weeks of the season, which includes two games against an impressive Lions squad, a road match-up against top-tier Dallas, and a rematch with Chicago on the road. If the Pack can keep playing how they have been, home field advantage in the playoffs could be in the foreseeable future of this young squad, meaning the road to the Super Bowl would go through one of the toughest places to play in the league, Lambeau Field, in the dead of winter. Throw in some Favre magic, which we’ve seen plenty already this year, and Green Bay can be seen as a threat to every team they may face.

Yesterday, August 4th, 2007 – a date which will live in infamy – the integrity of baseball was deliberately attacked by the bat of Barry Bonds.

Major League Baseball was at peace with Bonds and, at the solicitation of Bonds, Commissioner Selig was still in attendance at Bonds’ games looking toward the maintenance of peace with the slugger. Indeed, 3 innings after Bonds had commenced the blast, Brian Sabean delivered to ESPN a formal reply, while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing hope that lightning will strike Bonds down before 756 happened, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack at Bonds.

It will be recorded that the distance of San Diego from San Francisco makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned to rub salt in the wounds of opposing fans. During the intervening time the Giants have deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope of clean play.

The attack yesterday on PETCO Park has caused severe damage to baseball’s integrity. Very many American’s respect for the game has been lost.

Generally speaking, collegiate pitchers progress through the minors faster than international prospects or high school draftees. Joba Chamberlain is no different – having graduated a Husker no more than a year ago and was signed in a sandwich pick by the New York Yankees.

Fast forward about 8 months and here is Joba – in AAA and simply dominating. Striking guys out, working on complimentary pitches – solid control and a sick 96mph heater to a slow low 70’s curve ball. He’s built like a horse, and can be a definite innings eater out of the 2 or 3 sport in any rotation. Enter the Yankees system. In what can only be described as a Spiritfuck – they are moving Chamberlain to the bullpen in AAA Scranton. In his entire MiLB career – batters are hitting .203 off of him. Simply remarkable.

When we add in the 4.7:1 K:BB ratio – the 1.6:1 GB:FB tendency and that he averaged 6 innings a start on a loose-ish pitch regulation it becomes clearer why Joba is going to rot in the Scranton bullpen, with the likes of Chris Britton and Edwar Ramirez. You can make a strong case for all 3 to be in the MLB right now, replacing Proctor, Farsnwroth and Villone. Although Villone’s numbers are surprisingly good

I know what you’re thinking! “But the Twins did the exact same thing with Johan Santana!” – True. The Twins also did the exact same thing with Francisco Liriano. – How’s that working out for them? Joba is a special talent, much better than any of the garbage the Yankees have called up over the course of the season obviously sparing Hughes. The fact they are attempting to turn him into a reliever is absolutely moronic and I question decision in about every way it can be questioned.

But then this happened

Shira Springer on the Boston Globe’s website

“Kevin Garnett soon could become the newest member of the Celtics, multiple league sources said this afternoon, but two of the sources cautioned that any trade may not be as imminent as some early reports indicated.

As the trade currently stands, the Celtics would send Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, and two first-round picks to the Timberwolves for Garnett.

Al Jefferson is not included in the deal at the moment.”

Even as someone who loves Ryan Gomes,

Well, its fantasy football season again and BSS is here with the info you need. This is part 4 of a series detailing sleepers and busts.

Randy Moss – WR Patriots (click more to find out why)

Randy Moss is being drafted at an average spot of 42.2 overall in espn drafts, which is 9th among receivers. Even as a long time Patriots fan who likes Randy Moss, I can see this is lunacy.

Moss is one of, if the not the most physically talented receivers in the game today and is joining a contending team that many are speculating will motivate him to become his old self. Randy Moss the superstar playmaker that was the #1 WR in all of fantasy.

The problem isn’t Randy Moss, the problem is the Patriots system. Tom Brady throws the ball around to every possible target rather than focus on his go-to-guy. 11 Patriots got 100+ receiving yards over the 2006 season, a figure that led the league. Despite having an elite QB like Brady, only 1 player has gotten 1000+ yards during his tenure (Troy Brown during Brady’s first year as starter)

I happen to think Randy Moss will help the Pats a great deal, and his acquisition from a fantasy standpoint makes Brady a top 3 (fantasy) QB.

I do think Randy Moss will be the first Pats WR to break 1000 since Troy Brown, I just don’t think he will perform as a #1 WR for you, but will make a decent #2.
